BlastFest Science Festival

BlastFest is an intentional effort to inspire, promote and provide access to science through the integration of existing cultural celebrations. We believe that scientific literacy is a human rights issue that needs to be factored equally as basic reading and writing in order to function through daily life. We are on a mission to disrupt dominant and traditional perspectives and narratives that don't acknowledge or celebrate the many contributions that diverse communities have and continue to make in advancing science and technology.

What we are working towards:

  • Inspiring young people to the possibility of careers in STEM.

  • Supporting and promoting diverse communities as decision makers and stewards in the development of Science edutainment.

  • Providing information to parents and guardians in diverse communities about opportunities in STEM for the children and for themselves.

  • Information sharing and empowerment.

  • Building confidence.

  • The inclusive history of Science.

  • Debunking stereotypes in STEM.

  • Disrupt elite perceptions of STEM practice.

  • Connecting STEM to everyday life.

  • Nurturing personal interest as an entry point for the next generation of STEM professionals.

How we will achieve that:

  • Building inclusive partnerships in the promoting of diversity in STEM, by story sharing of diverse innovators in the history of STEM.

  • Developing and implementing innovative culture base methodology to promote diversity in STEM (i.e. Drama, comedy, music like the science of the Steel Pan)

  • In order for young people to reach their full potential, their whole self along with all intersections of their identity need to be valued and celebrated - BLAST Fest can be a pathway for sparking interest in STEM, by providing intellectual and interactive experiences as well as connections to opportunities that nurture interest and access.

  • Ensuring culture is front and center.

  • Establish long term relationships and partnerships

  • Recognize that within people groups there are unique communities that should be approached with respect. - Community w/in community

  • Honor the history of how marginalized communities have contributed to STEM and Spotlight the legacy of underrepresented contributions to science

  • Creating opportunities for intergenerational experiences to help keep our elders engaged, informed and empowered.

Success will look like:

  • Volunteers and partners have a clear understanding of BLAST Fest

  • All parties have shared language and messaging and feel empowered to contribute their ideas that are grounded on the mission

  • Partners are including BLAST Fest in grant applications

  • Establish committees w/structure and sustainability

  • Shared vision

  • Local partner organizations and communities see BLAST Fest as an important and valuable part of their lives

Committees and structures:
